Vivaldi’s Spring is one of my favorite pieces we have studied in this class thus far. This movement is followed by two other movements that complement this ‘season’ very well. After this the ritornello returns for a final time, which leads to the movement’s conclusion. The descending base line layered with the harmonies created by the other parts leads me to believe that this is a climactic moment in the piece. This by far is my favorite element that Vivaldi brings to life. The tremolos continue in all 4 parts except for the soloist who comes in with elided phrases, which sound like interruptions mirroring the confusion that comes along with all the elements of a storm. The final element of nature that Vivaldi introduces begins with forte sounding tremolos in all four parts, which leads us to envision a storm. Upon the conclusion of this section the ritornello returns once more. Vivaldi creates a water texture by softening the dynamic of this section while allowing the motion to be continuous. The ritornello returns and leads us to our next element. Vivaldi achieves this through scoring high-pitched notes with added ornamentation. When the soloist enters the first element that is introduced is supposed to resemble the sounds of birds. The concerto begins with a primary theme, which we call a ritornello because it continues to return throughout the duration of the first movement. We have no choice but to visualize all that Vivaldi is trying to portray to us. Vivaldi brings multiple elements of nature to life through his music. The piece features many stylistic elements, which allow us as listeners to become completely engrossed in what we are listening to. 1 is the apotheosis of music that creates vivid imagery upon being listened.
